This class investigated the concept of global health and examined certain diseases such as Malaria, Smallpox, Yellow Fever, HIV, and AIDS prominent in certain parts of the world. We also studied the impact of a global partnership and the work of global health organizations as well as the corruption present within the World Health Organization. We also explored the effects of medical tourism and NGOs, specifically the negative consequences that medical mission trips can cause if not conducted properly. This class taught me that when working in a global public health setting, one should not impose Western Medicine but get to learn about the culture of the country and how it impacts health in order to create a more effective health intervention program.

We studied how different dynamics of power, religion, and economies differ in different cultures and the effect that migration has on globalization. We also explored how different cultures view certain foods. For this class, my final project focused on the symbolizing and cultural significance behind the Haitian Independence day soup, known as Soup Joumou

PHC 3440: Global Public Health

This class addresses global health issues prominent in different parts of the world. We studied disease, illness, lack of access to health resources, and education and its effects in underdeveloped and low-income countries on a global setting. Every week we focused on a different country, studying the most common health issues that people in that country face. Our class assignments and projects required us to think outside of the box and create community health interventions to these commonly faced problems. We covered many different topics such as environmental global health, nutrition and gender, communicable diseases, reproductive and maternal health, one health and planetary health, and global health ethics to name a few.
