Wine & Dine Around the World
This campus life event was hosted at the Reitz Ballroom. Different cultural student organizations showcased the foods of their culture. Some tables also had drinks as well. A few of the representatives from different countries were also wearing traditional cultural clothing. I got to sample different dishes from different countries while learning a little bit about the cultural significance of the dishes. I tasted a sample of Russian Potato Salad and a Cuban sandwich, which my personal favorite. I only wish that Club Creole was able to participate in this and share Haitian food with other students.
Global Health Case Competition
This was a collaborative intervention project where students from different pre-health disciplines such as nursing, public health, and microbiology came together to create a health campaign to address Cervical Cancer in Bangladesh with only 48 hours to complete our proposal. This Global Health Case Competition allowed me to apply the skills that I have learned from my Global Health Culture, Global Public Health, and Culture and Medicine Class to approach the cultural component of addressing Cervical Cancer and talking to women about the health issues and informing them about the HPV vaccine without coming into the community with a white savior aspect.
Club Creole Pageant & Gala
The annual Club Creole Pagent and Gala is a celebration of Haitian culture and our independence which is on January 1st. Because of this, the Pageant and Gala are always hosted in January. The Pageant not only showcases Haitian cultural clothing but also allows guests to experience Haitian culture through many different performative aspects such as dancing and singing. The Gala also showcases Haitian dance performances by the Club Creole Dance Troupe and allows guests to experience the rich tasty dishes of the Haitian Cuisine. Aside from Haitian food, one of the things I live about Gala is Kompa, a modern Méringue dance music of Haiti. After the performances and food, the night ends with everyone dancing.
Coffee Without Borders: What's Cooking
This event was a collaboration with the Hispanic-Latinx Affairs where we discussed different holidays that are celebrated around different parts of the world through a trivia game and discussion amongst the participants. We also discussed different foods that are eaten during the holidays in different countries and cultures. Each participant was able to share their favorite cultural foods and holiday traditions. I got to share the cultural significance of the Haitian Soup Joumou which is made on January 1st to celebrate our independence. Often times as students in the US, we forget that there are many different holidays celebrated around the end of the year. This event was a reminder of the different holidays, traditions, and foods celebrated and eaten around the world.
